Great River School, an urban Montessori learning community, prepares students for their unique roles as responsible and engaged citizens in the world.

Founded on leadership, service, and peace formation, Great River fosters independence, critical thinking, respect, responsibility to self, to others, and to the earth.

School starts on Tuesday, 9/7

On Tuesday, September 7, 275 students will arrive at 8:30 am to begin the first day of the 2010-2011 academic year.    36 Faculty will welcome students to the beginning of the seventh year of the school.  The building looks great with prepared environments for all students, new opportunities for art, Spanish, athletics and after school activities.

Over 100 people joined the Great River Adolescent 1 (grades 7 & 8) faculty for the annual orientation on Wednesday night.  Such a great turnout makes the first few days of school go more smoothly as most students received schedules and families heard information about the fall trips.  Over 250 people were in attendance for the event at which returning and new students and families discussed the fall trips and academic expectations for the year ahead.

Varsity Soccer Team Announced

Over 30 players attended the pre-season practices of the high school soccer team. Everyone played well and offered their best effort. Making the choices about the final team was difficult, but as of today, the final roster has been chosen.

Volleyball Season Change

Girls Volleyball for girls in A2 & A3 has been reconfigured to be a club team.  Unfortunately, only 5 girls from Great River School/Twin Cities Academy have registered for volleyball, not enough to sustain a varsity level team.  Therefore, the 2010-2011 season has been cancelled.  However, a volleyball club (including GRS & TCA), with a parent (or parents) leadership will meet at scheduled times throughout the school year, practice or schedule scrimmages at TCA, and schedule some pinpointed times to recruit more girls to the club, who will be eligible for varsity play next year. This way, the girls can still play volleyball, but not at the risk of forfeiting games because of numbers. All girls interested in playing volleyball should talk to Marcus at Orientation on September 1 or contact him at 651-329-2219 for more information.

New Fall Sport added – Cross Country

All students at Great River School are invited to participate in the newest fall sport – cross country. If you like to run or think it might be fun to try running, the first practice will be Monday, August 30th and run through Friday September 3rd.  For more information, please go to the Fall sports page on this website (Activities/Athletics) or contact Pat Miles by phone: (651-487-0424) or email (miles002@umn.edu).
