Upper Elementary Key Experience

We are excited to tell you below about our plans for continuing our fall key experience with upper elementary students. This year, we will be engaging in exciting expeditions with two different locations (during different weeks) for the key experience. Three classrooms will be visiting Wolf Ridge environmental learning center, and three classrooms will be going out to Camp Widjiwagan. Both trips will include northwoods, hiking, naturalist walks, star viewing, and adventure in the boreal forests!

We learned over the last several years that both Wolf Ridge and Widjiwagan have appropriate and excellent programs for our students, and that each organization offers unique but different experiences that are high quality. For the coming year and into the future, we plan to rotate our classrooms every other year between Widjiwagan and Wolf Ridge for our fall key experience. If you have questions, please inquire with Jean Peters (Program Director) or Sam O’Brien (Head of School).

Boxtops for Education Volunteer Wanted

Are you interested in working on our Boxtops for Education program? It's not very time-consuming and gives the school cash to spend on students. This volunteer work would involve checking in periodically to pick up all saved Boxtops for Education and sorting and sending them in a couple of times during the school year. If you are interested in taking this project on, please contact Holly Bell at the front desk by the end of June.

Pool trip for elementary students - swimwear expectations and sunscreen for June 7th!

Hello Elementary families,

As the end of year and Great River’s June 7th trip to our local pool approaches, we want to make sure families all are aware of the following expectations for swimwear and sunscreen:

-Sunscreen: If you want to bring your own sunscreen for outdoor trips, please do so. Otherwise, we will apply sunscreen as a preventative measure on exposed skin. If you want to opt-out of sunscreen at GRS, please email office@greatriverschool.org with “Sunscreen Opt-Out” in the subject line. See more on GRS's sunscreen policies here.

-Clothing for Swimming : In accordance with our school gender equity policy and student-written dress code, all students are expected to wear swimsuits that covers their top, middle and bottom. This is true of all swimming the school does on field trips and key experiences. See below for examples of appropriate swimwear for school.

Untitled design (32).png

School-appropriate swimwear

  • One-piece suits that cover top, middle, and bottom

If students need a swim shirt for their trip to the pool, we will have GRS spiritwear available to lend for the day. If you have any questions about these expectations, please email us at communications@greatriverschool.org.

Buttermilk Falls Farm - Gratitude & Being in Ongoing Relationship

IMG_20181023_121931 (1).jpg

To all our friends and family at GRS,

We wish to express our genuine appreciation for the deep joys and wonders presented throughout this year of the Great River School - Buttermilk Falls CSA & Folk School partnership. We've seen hundreds of students at the farm this year where they planted, harvested, hiked, wrote, ate, dug, built, sang, served, played and participated with open hearts. The farm is better for it, and we know that the children are, too. Hands in the dirt, senses saturated with nature, hearts opened to animals, other people and the sacred task of stewardship in cooperation with others all make it so. Thank you!

-Christina & Carter along with Monty and our interns and apprentices 2018-19

We invite families and friends to join us for SOLSTICE-ST. JOHN'S at the farm on Sunday, June 23 from 4-7.
