Senior High Curriculum
Great River’s Senior High school
consists of 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grades. Each year of the
four year cycle includes specific work, study, and educational
experiences.
Montessori for the Older Adolescent
When young people reach high school, they
are increasingly ready to be more self-directed in their
education and take on certain adult roles in society. For the
young adult, Montessori has identified the following
developmental needs:
• To find the innermost
"vocation" or deep calling of the soul;
• To have a sense of mission or
commitment to one’s work and life;
• To experience deep, personal growth
with peers and positive adult models;
• To expand personal horizons;
• To form partnerships and close
collaborations;
• To be out in the world;
• To be involved in real, adult
projects that are important and relevant;
• To be empowered to change the
world.
Program Highlights
All School Service Project
The school year begins with all students in
the high school working on a service project, such as Habitat
for Humanity. The students will work in the metro area building
a house for a week, then travel to a rural area, camp together,
and help build another house. These two weeks will include work
in related academic areas of study.
Core Curriculum
The high school’s curriculum centers
on Three Academies. Each has three main areas of learning and
is shaped and supported by Four Institutes.
