Written in Collaboration by Lindsey Weaver and the IB 11th Grade Students Syan and Beza
Throughout the course of their week Syan & Beza were engaged in a wide variety of activities designed to provide them with an understanding of the legislative process, state government, public policy, public service, politics, and much more!
Here are some reflections & highlights from both students:
From Syan: "The page program was a transformative experience that highlighted the importance and impact of state government, along with the importance of inefficiencies in the lawmaking process, enabling bills to be discussed by lawmakers and the public, and as an important part of government checks and balances. We were in the room as bills were voted out of the house, debated on, discussed in committee, and as members of the public testified on bills important to them. We paged the floor of the house, and learned about the many different careers within the capital, both partisan and non partisan."
From Beza: "I had many memorable moments as a page at the High school page program. My favorites however were serving in the house and got to see Representative David Gottfried sworn in, causing the house to tie 67. I also enjoyed seeing puppies on a when a shelter for animals campaign came in to get their voices heard to rescue these animals. And meeting amazing people who became my new friends from other highschools and making our week poster together."
